Special thematic section “Feminism, Marxism and Women's Labor” (headed by Anna Temkina, EUSPb and Larisa Shpakovskaya, HSE, St.Petersburg) welcomes individual proposals in a frame of the conference «The scientific heritage of Karl Marx: modern civilization and capitalism (Dedicated to the 200th birth anniversary of Karl Marx)». The conference will be held 5-6 October 2018 in St. Petersburg. Please use this link to submit your proposal for the thematic section by July 15, 2018

In 1979, Heidi Hartmann considered the union of Marxism and Feminism as "unhappy". She argued that both Feminism and Marxism didn't use the straights of each other to analyze capitalism and acknowledge the situation and inequality of women. Feminism and Marxism explained differently women’s oppression and ways to achieve their liberation. Classical Marxism turned out to be gender blind in relation to women's double-bind position in paid employment, and sphere of reproduction. However, Marxism developed conceptual language and instruments for the analysis of inequality and oppression, which for several decades have been actively used by feminist-oriented scholars. They focused on women's position in the spheres of production and reproduction; female labor as reproductive, emotional and caring; they included in their analysis concepts of class and power dimension, exploitation, marginalization and alienation.

We invite social scholars who study various aspects of the gender division of labor, reproduction, care, emotional and domestic labor, as well as the theoretical aspects of Marxist feminism, to take part in the work of this section.

We offer the following topics for the presentations  (but not limit them to):

- women’s labor in the sphere of paid employment

- reproductive work, care, economic and social organization of reproduction

- emotions, emotional labor and emotional capitalism

- female labor and gender conflicts in / between public and private spheres

- women / queer movement and feminist-marxist theorizing today
