Since the 19th century, many thinkers have analysed the prospects for the coexistence of democracy and capitalism, focusing especially on the tension between the inequalities generated by capitalism the equality of citizens that is central to democracy. This lecture demonstrates that on both the left and right of the political spectrum one can find optimistic and pessimistic attitudes towards the compatibility of democracy and capitalism, and describes some of the key arguments advanced. In addition, it discusses how tensions between democracy and capitalism can change over time.
